CNB nabs 81 suspected drug offenders in islandwide operation

CNB mounted an islandwide anti-drug operation lasting from 27 June 2007 to 29 June 2007 as part of vigorous and deterrent enforcement action in the continued fight against drugs. A total of 81 suspected drug offenders, including 11 traffickers were arrested in various parts of Singapore. In the entire operation, approximately 188 grams of cannabis, 28 grams of heroin, 4 grams of ‘Ice’ and 9 Subutex tablets, with a street value of over $15,400 were seized.

On 27 June 2007 at about 1300 hours, CNB officers arrested a trafficker after he sold cannabis to a CNB undercover officer. The officers searched his vehicle and recovered another block of cannabis and 18 straws of ‘Ice’. A follow-up raid was conducted to arrest his supplier. At about 2115 hours, the supplier was arrested with one block of cannabis weighing approximately 103 grams. A total of 187.9 grams of cannabis and 4 grams of ‘Ice’ were seized from the trafficker and his supplier.

The trafficker is a male Chinese Singaporean, aged 38 years. His urine tested positive for amphetamine and cannabis. His supplier is a male Indian Malaysian aged 26 years. His urine tested positive for amphetamine and benzodiazepines. Both will be investigated for the offence of trafficking in a controlled drug.

Nine other traffickers were arrested in separate raids. Of the 70 suspected drug abusers arrested in the entire operation, 49 persons tested positive for controlled drugs. Of these, 22 will be sent to Drug Rehabilitation Centres, 1 will be referred to the SAF while the remaining 26 were released on bail pending further investigation. Amongst the 49 persons were 24 Chinese, 18 Malays, 4 Indians and 3 Others. The youngest arrested is a 14-year-old female Malay and the oldest is a 73-year-old male Chinese.

CNB will continue with its vigorous enforcement action against illicit drug activities to maintain a strong deterrent presence against both drug traffickers and abusers alike.
